Marriage is a beautiful covenant, but it takes work. Commitment. Communication. Love. Forgiveness. And a whole lot of prayer.
Satan is always trying to sneak into our marriages, distracting us with lies and busyness and sin and other things that we must fight against. I hope this list of Scriptures will be a mighty sword to use to fight against the devil's schemes in your marriage (Ephesians 6:11, 17).
There's something powerful about praying God's words back to Him, while adding a few of your own personalized requests. It helps align your desires with God's because you are praying for the exact things God wants for you and your marriage.
Personalize each verse to make it applicable to your own prayer requests for you, your spouse, and your marriage. You may want to post a few around the house or perhaps pray one a day and focus on it throughout the day.
Pray that you would remember your marriage is a holy covenant. "God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no man separate." Mark 10:6-9
Pray that you and your spouse would continue to grow in your relationship with God together and individually. "Be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart, considering what great things he has done for you." 1 Samuel 13:24
Pray that you and your spouse would grow in unity in your marriage. “I will give them singleness of heart and of action, so that they will always fear me for their own good and the good of their children after them.” Jeremiah 32:39
Pray that you and your spouse would love each other with humility and selflessness. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Philippians 2:3-4
Pray that you would be a spiritual encouragement to your spouse. "I long to see you that I may impart some kind of spiritual gift to strengthen you, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith." Romans 1:11-12
Pray that you would be kind and forgiving to your spouse. "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ forgave you." Ephesians 4:31-32
Pray that you would remember (especially during conflict!) your spouse is not the enemy, but that you are on the same team. "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Ephesians 6:11-12
Pray that regardless of what challenging life circumstances you are facing, you will face them together with your spouse. "Then Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried." Ruth 2:18
Pray that you and your spouse would both grow in each fruit of the spirit toward each other. "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." Galatians 5:22
Pray that you would see sexual intimacy as a renewal of your marriage covenant and an opportunity to show your love and commitment to your spouse. "I belong to my lover, and his desire is for me. Come, my lover, let us go to the countryside, let us spend the night in the villages. Let us go early to the vineyards...there I will give you my love." Song of Songs 7:10-12
Pray that you would help foster peace in your home and marriage. "The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. My people will live in peaceful dwelling places; in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest." Isaiah 32:17-18
Pray that you would not let busyness make you bitter toward your spouse or distract you from showing your spouse they are important to you. "Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him [Jesus] and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me! "Martha, Martha," the LORD answered. "You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed." Luke 10:40
Pray that you would grow in loving kindness toward your spouse. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." 1 Corinthians 4-8
Pray for any specific prayer requests you have for your marriage and your spouse. "So we have not stopped praying for you ... We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit." Colossians 1:9-10
Pray that you would grow in love and respect for your spouse's roles in your marriage, and for your own. "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church...Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her..." Ephesians 5:22-25
Pray that your marriage would grow and flourish and be blessed. "He is like a tree planted by streams of water which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers." Psalm 1:3
Prat that your marriage would be rooted in Christ, and filled with the things He has for your marriage. "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." Colossians 2:6-7
Pray that God would bring victory and restoration to your marriage if it has been struggling. "I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten." Joel 2:25
And perhaps most important of all, pray that your marriage would always belong to God, that God would be its chief builder and protector. "Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain." Psalm 127:1
